The following is based on DB Randolph-Kheim's introduction to Sheridan's troopers on the borders. It was the time when civilization in Kansas began traversing the gilded regions of the plains to the Rocky Mountains in rapid commerce, railways and telegraphs boldly ingress the solitude of the plains and the trails to Denver resonate with the rumble of moving trains, as an iron highway already links the two oceans. A time when the Native Americans in this region became alarmed at this new encroachment, they were ready at any moment for a desperate final effort to drive out the invaders of his hunting grounds. Fearful of his future, the tribes of the plains opposed such intrusions, for in them the kindred sees no benefit to the remnant of his race, who has taken sanctuary, after their deprivations, on the reservations and in the mountains. The struggle of time has come to solve for all time the question of whether the whites or the red men shall survive in the vast intermediate region between Eastern and Western civilization. It is a time when the encroaching necessities of modern civilization point to the inescapable doom of the Native American people of the plains. Their feral natures, incapable of restraint, render them by instinct adversaries to progress and the cause of humanity. As with the Buffalo, the course of civilization is the toll of destruction to them. It is an ending time. As the brutal bullet of the White Hunter ruthlessly slaughters the Buffalo, so the vices of civilization carry off those of the red men who have outlived their kindred.

Speaker 1:

The year was 1868 when war raged against all precedents for active hostilities. Most of the country was entirely unknown. These people, in a majority of cases, had come in contact with but a few Native American traitors or the white settlers during their murderous depredations upon his homesteads. The object was to show the unrestrained tribes the ability of the white man soldiers to brave the storms of winter and to surmount this impediment which had, in former years, protected them.
