After settling briefly in Elgin, Kansas, Catherine's health deteriorates once again, prompting John to make a desperate final decision. In late 1874, abandoning their brief stability, the family turns their wagon toward the high plains of Colorado, risking everything on the hope that the mountain air will finally heal Catherine.
