The attack unfolded with brutal speed, leaving John, Lydia, Stephen, Jane, and Joanna dead and scalped in the trampled grass within twenty bloody minutes.

Amidst the chaos and destruction, the remaining four young sisters—Catherine, Sophia, Julia, and Adelaide—were taken captive by the raiders, with Catherine and several others suffering severe injuries during the onslaught. Spared from execution by the intervention of a Cheyenne woman who claimed little Adelaide as her own, the surviving children were dragged into a harrowing captivity. The raiders vanished southward into the hills, leaving behind a plundered landscape and a burning wagon that cast a dark scar across the Kansas prairie.
